Do companies in India actually care about CGPA?

It depends on the company and the hiring stage. Mass recruiters like large IT services firms often use a CGPA cutoff, typically around 6.0 to 6.5, simply to manage application volume. Once you clear that filter, CGPA becomes largely irrelevant. Product companies, startups, and specialist firms rarely lead with CGPA at all, focusing instead on portfolios, projects, and demonstrated skills.

What matters more than CGPA when applying for jobs?

Recruiters place significant weight on communication skills, problem-solving and critical thinking, internship experience, a portfolio of real project work, coachability and attitude, and demonstrated leadership or initiative. These factors often outweigh a high CGPA, especially at product companies and startups.

How can I get a good job with a low CGPA?

Shift focus from the number to what you can control: build a portfolio of real projects, pursue internships, actively practice communication skills, and target companies that prioritize skills and fit over transcript cutoffs. Being deliberate about closing skill gaps matters more than the CGPA itself.
