Dr. Sudhir Kumar Routray is a Professor and the Dean (Academics In-Charge) at CMR University, where he leads academic planning and quality assurance while actively teaching and mentoring students across master’s and doctoral programmes. With over two decades of experience in industry, academia and research laboratories, Dr. Routray brings global expertise to his role, blending scholarly rigour with practical innovation.
He holds a Ph.D. in Communication Engineering from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, where his research focused on the statistical modelling of optical transport networks. He earned his Master of Science in Data Communications from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, and a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (Utkal University), India.
Dr. Routray’s research spans complex communication networks, 5G/6G technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence and machine learning, network science, and statistical analysis of communication systems. He has contributed to the planning and modelling of optical fronthaul and backhaul networks for 5G, and is currently focused on Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) deployments.
He has authored several influential papers in top-tier IEEE journals, with work cited for its contributions to optical networking, ICT for sustainability, STEM education, and the ethical implications of emerging technologies such as generative AI. He is proficient in programming languages including Java, Matlab, Python and R, and has domain expertise in modelling tools such as OPNET and EasyFit.
In addition to academic leadership and research, Dr. Routray is involved in consulting with local industries and securing research project funding to support innovation at the university.
