Aspirants begin their preparation when young, with foundational prep beginning in Grade 6 and more specialised, intensive training being prioritised from Grade 9 onwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so the rat race begins, with students finishing school and heading over to a training centre, where they spend a chunk of their high-school life preparing for an exam with over a million applicants. Approximately 16\u201317,000 of these lucky students make it and will go on to spend a rigorous four-year journey among what most would describe as \u201cthe cream of the crop\u201d. But what about the rest? Is all hope truly lost if you do not secure a seat in an IIT? Are all successful engineers graduates of these elite institutions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why they might not be the best option for you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

IITs are undoubtedly one of the best networks of institutions in the country. No one in India hasn\u2019t heard of them, and these universities are also globally well known for their academic rigour and the high calibre of students. However, they might not be the best choice for every student, and here\u2019s why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Your JEE score is lower than you\u2019d hoped
    This isn\u2019t the end of the world. There are still plenty of excellent institutions in the country that look beyond JEE scores. The right college encourages you to grow and develop beyond just grades.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. You want academic rigour as well as a social life
    While IITs are academically rigorous and can be a great place to make like-minded friends, balance can sometimes be harder to find. If you value a well-rounded college experience, targeting other institutions might be the best way to go.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. You need to be closer to home
    Not all decisions are purely academic. If your family needs you closer to home, then choosing a good local university can also put you on the right track towards your engineering dream.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Emerging colleges and the pros they offer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Sometimes, newer and up-and-coming colleges offer numerous advantages. They can end up being exactly the college experience you\u2019ve always wanted, even if they weren\u2019t your priority at first. A few benefits include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. The professors know you on a more personal level
      Older institutions have huge class strengths, often with over 100 students in the same class, and students can sometimes be reduced merely to their roll numbers. At colleges that aren\u2019t as well known, classes are often smaller, allowing a higher degree of personal attention. The low student\u2013teacher ratio enables students to ask questions freely and even walk in for one-on-one sessions with professors after class if needed.

    2. Your voice matters
      If you want to start a new student association, launch a start-up, or even bring in an industry leader for a seminar, a large institution can sometimes feel too bureaucratic. An up-and-coming university may have less red tape, allowing for a quicker, smoother process.

    3. Your mental health doesn\u2019t take a back seat
      At a smaller institution, balance is often emphasised. Students manage their studies alongside clubs and associations, a thriving social life, and adequate rest, prioritising mental wellbeing over stress. If you need a healthier, more well-rounded and supportive environment, a smaller college can be a great fit.

    4. You can pursue your passion alongside your degree
      Pursuing your interests at an institution like an IIT can sometimes feel like a luxury, since so much time is devoted to coursework. At many younger institutions, hobbies and interests are strongly encouraged, and students are given the time and support to explore them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Choosing what truly works for you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      At the end of the day, it\u2019s about your needs and goals. If an IIT is your dream, you qualify, and you can handle the responsibility that comes with being an IITian, it makes sense to pursue it. But if a smaller college with a great campus culture or a course you really like calls out to you, do your research and consider it seriously. College is what you make of it, not the other way around. Having the IIT brand on your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 might bring social prestige, but it doesn\u2019t automatically guarantee being the best at work or the smartest in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
