Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are no longer restricted to being mere concepts and are finding application at societal levels to mitigate at least one layer of plaguing issues. Both AI and ML are now being talked about increasingly and have even made it to academic circles as evident by their incorporation within university syllabi.

Research in AI and ML have also been giving rise to numerous startups in India. With innovation and application of AI-driven solutions to societal sectors being the focal point, new-age technological disruption is inevitable. Hence, problem solving becomes the focal point; through application of technology.

Problem Solving by AI/ML one societal sector at a time

Both AI and ML are applications that require harnessing and constant research to mitigate issues. Generally, research operations involving AI/ML are work in progress. In this regard, certain societal sectors that could positively feel the technological disruption and make human lives easier are:

  • Healthcare – This is one sector that has already been witnessing the positive impact of new-age technology. Innovations ranging from smart hospital management, smart diagnosis of diseases/disorders, to robot-assisted surgeries are all by products of research and application of AI/ML. As far as scope for innovation is concerned, technologists believe that with the sheer amount of healthcare data available in India, smart models to even predict future pandemics may not be far away.
  • Retail – Another sector that is slated to experience maximum new-age technological disruption, is Retail. Right from making the entire process of shopping more smarter with respect to recommending right products to end users; to ensuring compliance with local laws and regulations; to boosting existing eCommerce through smarter data models, new-age technology certainly holds exciting prospects.
  • Vehicular Traffic Management in Cities – Traffic management in cities is gradually turning out to be more complicated than imagined. With increasing vehicular numbers and reduction in disciplined drivers, technology is seemingly a way out to mitigate this crisis-like situation. Hence, technologists and data scientists are of the opinion that there could actually be smart AI-driven solutions like automatic and dynamic creation of green corridors in case of medical emergencies, better detection of drunk drivers, technical enablement of vehicles, and enhanced coordination of vehicular traffic at signals. With these in place, managing vehicular traffic at peak times may not be as challenging as before.

In summary, problem solving is at the core of AI/ML technologies. With the right research, data, and smart technologists, a smart society (without being confined to speeches of political leaders) is practically possible.
